Beijing has sought to downplay the COVID-19 wave it is experiencing ahead of the busiest travel period on the Chinese calendar.

Millions of people will travel around the country for the first time since the pandemic began ahead of Sunday’s Lunar New Year celebrations.to the less strict Category B level after major protests forced the government to step back from its drastic zero-COVID approach.

Speaking to news agency Xinhua Vice Premier Sun Chunlan said patients in critical conditions are “steadily” decreasing."The number of critical patients at hospitals is decreasing steadily, though the rescue mission is still heavy." The World Health Organisation has been critical of Beijing’s definition of COVID-19 deaths, with Emergencies Director Michael Ryan claiming figures under-represent the true impact.

Many countries, including Australia, reinstated mandatory testing requirements for incoming passengers from China, Hong Kong and Macau.
