GEORGE TOWN: The release of the special Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawal of up to RM10,000 saw the people’s spending power increase, with traders reporting brisk sales for Hari Raya.

Baju Melayu trader Ahmad Mujahid Soid, 38, said people had been thronging his stall at Uptown Bandar Perda in Bukit Mertajam.

“Ever since the special EPF withdrawal was released, I could see that people’s spending power has increased. “After two years of not being able to celebrate Hari Raya on a grand scale due to the pandemic, people spent on quality items for themselves and loved ones,” he said.He said that this year black baju Melayu and baju kurung were the most sought-after attire.Second-hand shoe trader Mohd Norkhairinizam Abu Seman, 38, expressed joy at the steady stream of shoppers who flocked to his shop.

He said this year’s sales were much better compared with last year, and he was giving a discount for quality shoes at RM50 per pair.Muhammad Nasrullah Harun, 23, was delighted to have found a baju melayu to match his wife’s attire.Another shopper, Muhamad Farhan Faiz Amran, 27, was glad that this year, there were plenty of choices with discounts to boot.

Meanwhile, state Traffic and Public Order Department chief Supt Zafri Zolkapli said there was an increase in vehicles in Penang but the situation was under control.Article type: metered
