Collaboration can be better than competition.

Centre for Market Education Research fellow Liew Chee Yoong said it would be a “good idea for those digital bank licence winners to team up or partner with those consortiums or parties which did not win the licences to leverage on the funding as well as obtain synergy and economies of scale in tapping the banking market.”

Experts have said that customer acquisition was one of the key elements of cost and also market access that the newly minted digital banks will face out of the gate apart from getting the banking infrastructure ready. “Competing against the other four successful bidders, who also have very deep pockets and strong financial partners, might be tough for the KAF-led consortium. They may need to work with other parties with very deep pockets and certain areas of expertise,” said Ng.

“In addition, Bank Negara is also correct in imposing an asset valuation limit of RM3bil in order to prevent ‘too big to fail’, which may generate systemic risk in the financial sector,” he said. “Regarding potential tie-ups and mergers and acquisitions , it is premature to say, but everybody would be looking at how these five digital banks perform,” he said.
