A 61-year-old man in Ipoh had his motorcycle confiscated by the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) for operating it without a valid road tax for 23 years.
A 61-year-old man in Ipoh had his motorcycle seized by the Malaysian Road Transport Department ( JPJ ) during a routine roadblock. The man had been riding his Honda EX5 Dream motorcycle without a valid road tax for an astonishing 23 years. The motorcycle was among 15 confiscated during an operation on Jalan Sibilin-Ipoh on February 6th.
The senior citizen, who owns a workshop, claimed he hadn't renewed his road tax because he primarily used the motorcycle for short trips within his housing area and not on major roads. However, JPJ Perak Director Mohammad Yusoff Abustan stated that the man's road tax and motor vehicle license (LKM) expired in 2002. He emphasized the seriousness of this offense, explaining that an LKM serves not only as proof of vehicle registration but also ensures the owner fulfills road tax obligations and adheres to vehicle safety standards.Yusoff added that strict legal action would be taken against the motorcycle owner for violating Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which mandates that all vehicles on the road must have a valid vehicle license. He highlighted the potential risks associated with operating a vehicle without a valid LKM. In the event of an accident, the lack of a valid license can significantly complicate matters. Drivers and riders without a valid LKM risk being uninsured in case of an accident, leaving them vulnerable to substantial financial liabilities. Yusoff also pointed out that failing to renew an LKM is a punishable offense, potentially resulting in a fine of up to RM2,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both, upon conviction. This incident serves as a stark reminder to all road users to maintain the currency of their vehicle documents
