A woman has died following a suspected mountain lion attack on a hiking trail in Colorado, prompting an investigation and the euthanization of two big cats. This would be the state's first such fatality in decades.

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a woman has died following a suspected mountain lion attack on a hiking trail in Colorado . The event, which occurred on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County, is being investigated by state wildlife officials who are working to confirm the details of the attack. If confirmed, this would mark the state's first such fatality in decades, underscoring the rarity of these types of encounters.

The incident unfolded on Thursday around 12:15 pm when hikers on the trail discovered a person lying on the ground and a mountain lion nearby. Witnesses attempted to scare the animal away by throwing rocks, allowing them to approach the injured individual. A physician among the witnesses found no pulse, highlighting the severity of the situation and the critical need for immediate medical attention.\Following the discovery, a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched, involving wildlife officials, sheriff's deputies, park police, and volunteer firefighters. A state biologist, conducting an annual deer survey by helicopter, joined the search from the air, providing valuable aerial support. Additionally, houndsmen were brought in with dogs to track the scent of the mountain lions, a highly effective method for locating these elusive animals. Tragically, two mountain lions were euthanized in connection with the incident. One animal was shot at the scene but managed to flee before being rediscovered and shot again. A second lion, found in the vicinity, was also killed, adhering to state policy that mandates the euthanasia of any wildlife involved in human attacks to ensure public safety. Pathologists will now conduct necropsies on the animals to examine them for any underlying neurological diseases, such as rabies, and to look for signs of human DNA, which will help in the investigation and provide clarity about the circumstances of the attack.\Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) spokeswoman Kara Van Hoose emphasized the rarity of mountain lion attacks, citing only 28 reported incidents since 1990, with the last fatality occurring in 1999. Mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, are more frequently seen during the winter months as they follow deer and elk to lower elevations in search of food. The CPW offers guidelines for encountering mountain lions, including making noise to scare them away, holding objects overhead to appear larger, and slowly backing away from the animal. Mountain lions, once considered big game, have experienced a population increase since 1965 due to supportive management practices. These animals have the broadest geographic range of any native mammal in the Americas, excluding humans, extending from western Canada to Argentina. Though once present across the United States, they are now extinct or endangered in the eastern states, with their stronghold in the western regions. Adult mountain lions can grow to over six feet long, weigh more than 130 pounds, and are characterized by their black-tipped tails. Deer are a primary food source for them, and they typically hunt by stealth, often ambushing their prey from trees or rocky overhangs. This recent incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of the wilderness and the importance of respecting wildlife and following safety precautions when venturing into their habitat
