The Malaysian government is taking steps to safeguard the reputation of the Musang King durian, a uniquely Malaysian product, from imitation and mislabeling, particularly in the Chinese market.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia 's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mohamed Sabu , emphasized the unique Malaysia n identity of the Musang King durian, asserting that other countries cannot legitimately market their durian produce under the same name.
Popularly known as Mat Sabu, the minister clarified this stance during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, February 25th, highlighting the protection afforded to the Musang King durian through Malaysia’s Geographical Indication (GI) registration. This legal framework safeguards the origin and distinct qualities of the Malaysian-grown Musang King, preventing other nations from falsely associating their products with the renowned Malaysian variety. Mat Sabu underscored the significance of this protection, stating that while other durians might resemble Musang King in appearance, the taste experience is undeniably different. This is crucial for maintaining the premium reputation of Malaysian Musang King durians in international markets, particularly in China, where the fruit enjoys immense popularity and commands high prices. The minister’s comments were in response to inquiries from Ngeh Koo Ham, who raised concerns about durians from Thailand and Vietnam entering Malaysia before being re-exported to China, as well as the unauthorized use of the Musang King label on durians sold directly to China. These practices pose a significant threat to the integrity of the Malaysian durian industry and could undermine consumer trust and market value. \Mat Sabu's response outlined the government's proactive measures to protect the Malaysian durian industry. He revealed that ongoing discussions are underway with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) to ensure the safety and authenticity of Malaysian Musang King exports. These discussions are focused on establishing clear protocols and enforcement mechanisms to prevent the mislabeling and fraudulent sale of non-Malaysian durians under the Musang King name. Furthermore, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and origin of Musang King durians destined for export. FAMA mandates that all authentic Malaysian Musang King durians carry official FAMA and MyBest labels, providing consumers with a visible assurance of authenticity. The minister recounted his personal observations during visits to China, noting instances where durians were deceptively labeled as Musang King, yet the taste clearly did not match the genuine Malaysian product. He emphasized the need for continued engagement with the GACC to combat this issue. \Addressing the broader strategy for safeguarding the Musang King brand, Mat Sabu stressed the importance of educating Chinese consumers about the distinction between authentic Malaysian Musang King durians and imitations.
