TORONTO, May 25 (Reuters) - Hundreds of fans draped in the colours of countries from across the globe gathered outside Toronto's city hall on Monday to catch a glimpse of the World Cup trophy, offering a preview of the multicultural spectacle the city promises to deliver when the tournament kicks off next month.
NEARLY RM140,000 was raised in just over 50 hours after television personality Datuk Aznil Nawawi launched a fundraising initiative to help actress Amyza Aznan ease the financial burden of her son’s battle with aggressive cancer.
Berita Harian reported that the overwhelming response reflected the generosity and compassion of Malaysians towards families facing hardship. Aznil, better known as Pak Nil, said the initiative was driven purely by a desire to help Amyza and her family, without any personal interest. He said Amyza was initially reluctant to open a fundraising account as she feared negative perceptions and preferred to support her son’s treatment costs through her own efforts rather than seek sympathy.
“She did not want people to make assumptions or speak negatively. She wanted to work and manage things on her own. ” However, Aznil said Amyza eventually agreed after he explained that the initiative was entirely his own decision, although she remained concerned that it could become a burden for him. He admitted he had initially planned to keep the fundraising campaign open for a week but was surprised by the response.
“When I informed Amyza of the amount raised during a recent podcast, she was speechless and could only express her gratitude. ” >For a couple in Langkawi, what began as caring for their pet goat has grown into a bond akin to that between parent and child, who say the animal has brought joy into their lives after 11 years of marriage without children.
Harian Metro reported that the seven-month-old goat, Joyah Aspalela Asparagus, has now unexpectedly become a local celebrity after its story attracted attention through newspaper and television coverage. Its owner, Emi Malisa Yon, 41, said she and her husband, Mohammad Shukri Razali, 38, never expected Joyah to suddenly gain widespread attention.
“There is nothing wrong with caring for and loving it like our own child because we do not have children,” Emi said. The above articles are compiled from the vernacular newspapers .
