PETALING JAYA: A coalition of NGOs supporting the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan announced today that it would mobilise a movement against Umno in the state after a party leader allegedly dragged the royal institution into political discourse at an event. Sekretariat Taat Setia Sokongan Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan said it was disappointed with the party’s leadership for failing to reprimand state Umno chief Jalaluddin Alias over his statements at the party’s 80th anniversary convention on May 2.

'Remember: 'The ruler and the rakyat are inseparable'. Whoever betrays the ruler betrays the people. And traitors have no place in Negeri Sembilan.

'The secretariat will mobilise the 'Tolak Penderhaka Umno ' wave across all 36 state constituencies,' the group’s chairman, Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin, said in a statement. On May 3, the coalition accused Jalaluddin of reducing the royal institution to 'cheap political fodder in a bid for support'.

Jalaluddin, in his speech at the convention, outlined the chronology of the institutional crisis to justify the decision by he and 13 other Umno assemblymen to withdraw support for menteri besar Aminuddin Harun. Jalaluddin reiterated that the move was due to Aminuddin’s failure to properly manage the state’s constitutional crisis, which had drawn public attention. The coalition had given Jalaluddin and the 13 other Umno assemblymen 48 hours to apologise to Negeri Sembilan ruler, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

It also called on the police and Attorney-General’s Chambers to investigate the matter under the Sedition Act 1948, the Penal Code, and for offences related to violating the Negeri Sembilan constitution, for insulting the royalty and inciting public disorder. The coalition also said that Umno’s Supreme Council must suspend and sack all Negeri Sembilan Umno leaders involved for tarnishing the party’s name and committing treason against the ruler.

Shahriman today said Negeri Sembilan Umno’s leadership had refused to seek forgiveness, and the party had taken no action against it.

'Silence means consent. Consent means complicity,' he said, adding that the people of Negeri Sembilan must reject Umno representatives at the next election.
