Vatican's Continued Resistance to Women Deacons: A Pattern of Delay and Exclusion
VaticanWomen DeaconsCatholic Church

This article examines the Vatican's ongoing resistance to the ordination of women as deacons, highlighting a pattern of suppressed reports, delayed decisions, and reliance on theological arguments that emphasize male dominance. It critiques the Church's approach, questioning the motives behind the consistent exclusion of women from leadership roles and the reliance on 'further study' to avoid addressing the issue.

The Vatican 's consistent refusal to accept women in the diaconate, while perhaps disappointing, should not be surprising to anyone familiar with the history of the Church. The invoking of male/female nuptial imagery, a literalization of a metaphor, highlights a fundamental misunderstanding. Jesus, a man, is presented as the representation of Christ, but Christ transcends gender. This focus on male dominance echoes Mary Daly's observation that when God is perceived as male, the male becomes God.

The historical context reveals a long-standing pattern of excluding women from positions of power and influence. In the early centuries, women were systematically removed from sacramental and administrative roles, shifting from being successors of Mary Magdalene, who brought the news of resurrection, to being portrayed as daughters of Eve, a source of temptation and the origin of sin for humanity. Subsequently, in the medieval period, the justification shifted to the idea that women's physical and intellectual capabilities were insufficient for acting in persona Christi. This consistent marginalization reveals deep-seated biases. \It is striking how the Church leadership has consistently sought to justify their stance on the female diaconate. Rather than basing decisions on sound premises, the Church seems to arrive at a conclusion and then seek arguments to support it. Uncomfortable truths are persistently overlooked. When the historical and intellectual justifications crumbled, the Vatican's response was to initiate further studies. This seems like a reasonable approach, but unfortunately, there is a recurring pattern of study results not being published, particularly when they challenge preconceived notions. For instance, in 1973, a report concluding that women could serve as deacons was never released, instead being shelved for further study. The pattern continued in 1992-97, when a similar conclusion was reached, yet Cardinal Ratzinger refused to endorse it. The appointment of a former graduate student to lead a study commission in 2002 further exemplifies the manipulation of process. The commission's findings, though implying that women deacons would differ from male deacons, essentially left the final decision to the magisterium. Pope Francis created commissions between 2016-18 and 2020-22, whose reports were not released. Furthermore, during the 2025 Synod, Study Group 5 was the only group of ten to avoid producing a report. While eventually, information was released which did not see impediments to women’s service, the report ultimately stated that the discernment needs to continue. These are clear delaying tactics. \The Vatican's tactics, using the guise of further study and continued discernment, along with suppressed reports and carefully chosen study groups, raises serious questions. It compels us to consider why the Church leadership has effectively made an idol of maleness. More importantly, it challenges the continued hope and willingness of women to believe, wait, and learn from these experiences, by subordinating their own vocations to this obsession with the maleness of God. This consistent refusal to accept women in the diaconate, despite historical precedent and findings from internal studies, reveals a deeply ingrained bias. It highlights the persistence of patriarchal structures within the Church and their resistance to change. The consistent invocation of tradition and the deferral of decisions through further study serve to maintain the status quo and prevent women from assuming their rightful place within the Church's leadership
