MFMF's Ascent: From Viral Hits to Global Ambitions

An interview with the Malaysian music production duo MFMF, revealing their journey to success, insights into creating viral music, the impact of their 'Healing' series, and their aspirations to break into the international K-Pop market.

Within just a few years, MFMF , led by Brendan Lim and Zen, has successfully positioned itself as one of the most influential composers and music producers in Malaysia. MFMF began to be the choice of big-name artists in the country, thereby proving their creativity through their series of viral songs such as Stop Lah Being So Cute, Peluang Kedua, Lara, and Sutera, to name a few.

The existence of MFMF is not only proven by viral songs and awards received, but also has a great influence on social media applications through the Healing segment, which is a series of remakes of popular songs with local singers in their own style and way. In short, they know how to start a viral music trend, the question is, how far can the formula of a 'hit' song be read by the creator? Answer, Brendan! After producing a series of viral songs, where can we evaluate the potential of a viral song? The trend, the song, or the singer? When writing a song, we don't really set expectations. Usually in studio sessions, we just want to make the best of the previous song. But sometimes we have a gut feeling, we see potential. The pairing of a song and a singer is indeed very important. A good singer really manages to convey the meaning of the song so that the listener can feel it. Have any artists come and ask you for a song that is 'guaranteed to go viral'? As if the viral song is entrusted to you alone. If so, how do you deal with that situation?\I think that's normal, but not with artists. More to the management or talent agencies. Everyone wants a viral song, and we will produce something that is listener-friendly but will go through discussions such as understanding the story of the song, and also the visuals produced must be in sync. All parties need to understand the important components to jointly make a work successful. We at MFMF have never faced that situation but do not deny that many other composer friends are 'struggling'. Maybe because there's a lot of work and they can't give their true potential. In terms of work, never, but in terms of social media content, yes, it has happened. That's why, we once stopped the 'Healing' series on social media for a while. Regarding that, you previously said the 'Healing' series has its own philosophy. Can you tell us a bit why you took a 'break' from making videos and reappeared? Originally, the series was just for fun, because we wanted to sing with artist friends. Sessions where we can be free to sing in any way we want. That's how me and my friends have fun. The longer it goes on, I didn't expect the inbox to be filled up when many people were interested in joining. I just did it and never asked anyone for money to make that content. But the time came when there was a lot of work, I realized I couldn't do my best for that content. I was in a dilemma because Healing should be something meaningful for friends but I started to feel forced. That's why, I took a break until I could arrange a better system like now. It depends on royalties whether the song is famous or not. The more popular a song, the more we get. But I can't represent others, but as MFMF, it's enough to cover the studio. It's also difficult to have a rate card system for composers because it also depends on seniority. Their prices and experience cannot be the same as new composers. The highest might be RM30,000 for us to commercialize. But other amounts will follow the collection of whether the song goes viral and collects royalty income. If so, it can reach up to six figures.\We want to further elevate the music industry in Malaysia to an international level. Maybe many don't know but we do write a lot of demos for K-Pop. I can't mention the songs for whom, but for the SM Entertainment company. For the past three years, we have been looking for opportunities and we are already at the stage where they listen to the demos. Now, waiting for the response from their side
