Jesus' Fulfillment of the Law: Understanding and Living the True Spirit
JesusTorahLaw

This article explores Jesus' perspective on the Law of Moses, emphasizing that He did not come to abolish it but to fulfill it. It examines how Jesus expanded and deepened the Law, focusing on the importance of love, sincerity, and inner transformation. Examples of laws Jesus addressed are examined, highlighting His emphasis on the spirit of the law over literal interpretation and the rejection of hypocrisy. The article concludes by emphasizing that following Jesus means embracing a life guided by love and illuminated by His teachings.

Jesus firmly stated, I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17). The meaning of the Torah /law is to be viewed and understood according to its purpose, not literally. For example, Jesus ' teachings were strict against murder, adultery, and oaths, but lenient towards the meaning of the Sabbath.

He emphasized the two great commandments of love: love for God (Deuteronomy 6:5) and love for neighbor (Leviticus 19:18), because all the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 22:34-50) depend on them. Thus, as the New Moses while using the Torah, Jesus taught and personally implemented God's will according to the true law. Therefore, it is clear that Jesus affirmed the existence of laws and the obligation to implement them. But at the same time, He eliminated the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees in the understanding and implementation of the Torah. God's law must be understood and implemented with spirit and in an evangelical way, that is, with love and sincerity of heart as taught in the Gospel. Jesus touched on six laws as examples. He said, You have heard it said this way, but I say to you this way or in this manner. One is about accepting the law of Moses, but expanded and deepened (verses 21-22; 27-28; 43-44). The other He rejects, because the law is not a basic attitude towards life, if one wants to live according to Jesus (verses 31-32; 33-37; 38-39). As an example, the expansion and deepening of the law of Moses is: we must eliminate feelings of resentment, revenge or evil intentions. When obeying the law of Moses not to kill, and if killing must be punished, Jesus still added, Everyone who is angry with his brother must be punished (verses 21-22). If you go to Church to worship and want to give alms (collection) but you remember something in your brother's heart against you, go first reconcile with your brother, then go to worship. Only those who have true love will be able to consider all people of the same dignity as themselves! Love is unifying, at the same time restoring when that unity is broken! Any prayer or sacrifice to God is false if accompanied by hatred. An example of the law of the Torah rejected by Jesus is the sixth law of the Ten Commandments of the Decalogue (God's Commandment through Moses). According to this law, Moses forbade adultery, You have heard the word, Do not commit adultery! But I tell you: Whoever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery in his heart. And Jesus forbade impure/evil thoughts and desires, but asked everyone to stay away from opportunities to sin, and encouraged self-control by prioritizing what is required to save the soul and body (verses 29-30). Furthermore, Jesus forbade divorcing a wife because of adultery by giving her a certificate of divorce (verse 31), because it is contrary to the law of love. Only with the unity of love can marriage be preserved or restored (see Matthew 19:9). Finally, Jesus taught us not to trust or be suspicious of each other, that is, by holding firmly to the unity and basic equality between words and deeds. Yes means yes, no must mean no! Thus, it is clear that Jesus' basic attitude towards the Torah was not to abolish it, but to fulfill it, however, by perfecting it. But the old law was perfected by Jesus. The God in the Old Testament is the same as the God in the New Testament. However, the one and same God reveals Himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the one who, with the Holy Spirit, gives the true meaning of God's law, and gives teachings and examples of how to implement it. Our conclusion is: obedience to the law and living a truly Christian life means: following Jesus, seeing Jesus as an example, and taking the path of life that is always illuminated by the light of Jesus
