SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said on Friday (March 13) that it will engage the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) over a second unfair trade practices probe the American agency has initiated.
NILAI: Police raided an illegal entertainment outlet at Taman Semarak 2 near here on Friday , believed to be employing Myanmar nationals as guest relations officers . Nilai OCPD Supt Johari Yahya said 11 Myanmar nationals - two men and nine women aged between 19 and 53, were detained during the operation.
He said the raid at about 3.30pm was conducted by the D7 Division of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Negeri Sembilan police headquarters, with assistance from the Nilai district police headquarters. "Initial investigations found that the premise was operating as an entertainment outlet employing foreign nationals as GROs, who were paid RM10 per hour to accompany customers in karaoke rooms,” he said in a statement on Saturday . Johari said further checks revealed that the foreigners had misused their social visit passes to work, while several individuals did not possess valid travel documents to remain in the country. He said police also seized various equipment used for entertainment activities, including karaoke song selection tablets, microphones, audio systems, television sets, business record books and 49 cans of alcoholic beverages believed to be untaxed. The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1998, Sections 56 and 6 of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Regulation 39 of the Immigration Regulations 1963, and Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967. — Bernama
