An alternative lane is in place but only allows light vehicles, making the stretch between the two Sabah east coast districts impassable for heavy vehicles. Kinabatangan OCPD Supt Ravi Duraisamy said they were informed that the road collapse occurred because of a groundwater swell from incessant rainfall.

"The driver and passengers received treatment at Hospital Kinabatangan," he said in a statement. A contractor appointed under the Pan Borneo Highway project, JAD Reka Kaya, has built a diversion lane to ease traffic flow, he added. He said the Kinabatangan district Public Works Department has been alerted to take follow-up action.
