Hari Raya Aidiladha, also known as Hari Raya Haji, is a significant and joyous occasion for Muslims worldwide, with celebrations including prayer, charity, and ritual sacrifice of livestock. The date for the celebration has been announced, and Muslims in Thailand will observe a day later, despite challenging weather conditions in some provinces.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia ns will celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha on Wednesday, May 27, the Conference of Rulers announced tonight. In a broadcast over RTM , its acting assistant secretary, Affendi Jalaludin , said the conference had declared that 1 Zulhijjah 1447H will fall tomorrow.
Aidiladha, also known as Hari Raya Haji in Malaysia, is celebrated through prayer, charity, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock. Muslims in Indonesia and Singapore will also celebrate Aidiladha on May 27.
However, Muslims in Thailand will celebrate the festival a day later on Thursday, May 28, with 1 Zulhijjah 1447H falling on May 19. The date is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon and through astronomical calculations. Thailand’s Sheikhul Islam, Arun Boonchom, announced that the new moon was not sighted in several parts of Thailand due to cloudy and rainy weather in a number of provinces.
Thailand has about 10 million Muslims, with the majority residing in the southern provinces such as Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. In Jakarta, Indonesia’s religious affairs minister said moon-sighting observations had determined that the crescent moon had met the criteria established by the religious ministers of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. In Singapore, the republic’s mufti said astronomical calculations showed that the crescent moon remained above the horizon after sunset on Sunday evening.
