PETALING JAYA: Roared on by a packed home crowd, Denmark powered into the Thomas Cup semi-finals after beating Thailand in Horsens.

-The Star filepic KOTA KINABALU: Umno must embrace decisive strategic changes to remain relevant in Malaysia’s evolving political landscape , said Sabah Umno treasurer Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak .

He said Umno was at a “critical crossroads” that demands not only reflection on its legacy but also fresh, effective approaches to meet current challenges. Salleh Said said that under Malaysia’s first-past-the-post electoral system, political cooperation is vital to avoid vote-splitting that could jeopardise victory.

“Umno must work with partners who share the same goals. Avoiding vote fragmentation is the key to maximising opportunities,” he said in a statement on Saturday . Salleh urged decisions to be grounded in data and grassroots realities rather than sentiment, noting that in Sabah, Umno should consider structured cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah through strategic seat distribution. For Sarawak, he suggested a pragmatic approach by supporting Gabungan Parti Sarawak instead of contesting directly.

Salleh said that the changing behaviour of voters is now more issue-driven, focusing on transparency, integrity, and cost of living. Despite challenges, Salleh said he was confident that Umno can remain a force if it adapts to current realities and strengthens strategic alliances. He praised Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for maintaining leadership stability during this transitional phase.
