A French woman, Anne, who was scammed out of €830,000 after believing she was in a relationship with Brad Pitt, has become the target of online harassment following a television interview about her ordeal. TF1, the French television channel that aired the interview, has since withdrawn it from its platforms to protect Anne from further abuse.
A French woman named Anne has been subjected to intense online harassment and ridicule after revealing on television how she lost her life savings to scammers posing as Brad Pitt. Anne, a 53-year-old interior decorator, shared her story on TF1, explaining that she believed she was in a romantic relationship with the Hollywood star, leading her to divorce her husband and transfer €830,000 (RM3.8 million) to the con artists.
The scammers used fake social media and WhatsApp accounts, as well as AI image-creating technology to send Anne what appeared to be selfies and messages from Pitt. They fabricated a story about Pitt needing money for kidney treatment, claiming his accounts were frozen due to divorce proceedings with Angelina Jolie. Anne spent a year and a half believing she was communicating with Pitt, only realizing she had been scammed when news of Pitt's real-life relationship with girlfriend Ines de Ramon surfaced. Following the interview's broadcast, Anne faced a wave of online abuse and mockery. TF1 presenter Harry Roselmack acknowledged the harassment and took the decision to remove the interview from their platforms to protect the victim. At the time of the broadcast, Anne was reportedly suffering from severe depression and had received hospital treatment. The incident sparked widespread discussion about the dangers of online scams and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Experts have pointed out that artificial intelligence (AI) technology has significantly increased the risk of identity theft, hoaxes, and fraud online. Anne's story serves as a stark reminder of the need for caution and awareness when engaging with people online, especially those claiming to be famous individuals
