JPJ Suspends Bus Driver's Licence After Johor Crash, Plans for More Body Cameras

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has suspended the PSV licence of an express bus driver involved in a Johor crash and is increasing the number of body cameras for its enforcement officers.

ALOR SETAR: The Road Transport Department ( JPJ ) has taken immediate action following a bus accident in Johor, suspending the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence of the express bus driver involved. This action, effective immediately, stems from a crash that occurred at KM19 of Jalan Johor Baru-Air Hitam on Sunday, March 8th, resulting in injuries to ten passengers.

The suspension falls under Section 56 of the Road Transport Act 1987, pending the complete findings of the ongoing investigations into the accident. The department is also proactively conducting a thorough JPJ Inspection and Safety Audit (Jisa) on the bus involved. This detailed assessment is designed to scrutinize various safety aspects and ensure full operational compliance of the vehicle. This includes a review of all mechanical components, emergency equipment, and adherence to safety regulations. The Jisa will also examine the maintenance records of the bus to ensure that it has been properly serviced and maintained. The objective is to identify any potential contributing factors to the accident and to improve safety standards within the express bus industry. Furthermore, JPJ has already checked the vehicle’s Speed Limitation Device (SLD), confirming that its certification remains valid until the following year. The investigation of the accident has been transferred to the police, given it involves a road crash, while JPJ will concentrate on enforcement actions under its authority. \During the accident, the bus reportedly went out of control while navigating a bend, veering off the road and overturning near Kampung Sepakat Baru. The co-driver and nine passengers were reported to be injured. The authorities are investigating the cause of the bus veering off the road and overturning. They are also investigating if there were any mechanical faults or human error that contributed to the accident. A thorough review of the accident will be undertaken to determine the causes of the crash and implement preventative measures to stop similar incidents from reoccurring in the future. This will involve analyzing the driver's actions, the road conditions, and the mechanical state of the vehicle. The aim is to identify areas for improvement in road safety protocols and prevent future accidents from endangering public safety. JPJ recognizes the importance of maintaining road safety standards. \In a separate development, JPJ is planning to increase the deployment of body cameras for its enforcement officers. Aedy Fadly mentioned that the department currently has about 100 body cameras, which were introduced in November of the previous year, primarily used during enforcement operations. These cameras have proven their effectiveness, as officers are required to wear them during operations. However, the limited number necessitates their use on a rotational basis. JPJ is currently preparing a new procurement plan, including the drafting of tender specifications, with the goal of increasing the number of body cameras to approximately 500 units or potentially more, depending on the approved budget allocation. The expansion of body camera usage is intended to improve transparency and accountability during enforcement activities. It will also serve as a deterrent to misconduct and help in the accurate recording of events. The use of body cameras is intended to enhance the overall effectiveness and credibility of law enforcement operations. The increase in body cameras demonstrates the department's dedication to modernizing its operational procedures and improving transparency. This initiative aligns with the government's efforts to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations effectively. The body cameras help improve documentation and promote a sense of accountability and transparency in dealing with traffic violations and other road-related incidents. This is a positive step towards ensuring the safety of all road users
