KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 — Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he has instructed the Pakatan Harapan Convention secretariat to review a complaint lodged by the Johor Media Club over an alleged rough incident involving media practitioners during the convention on Sunday.
Fahmi who is also the convention director, expressed regret over the incident, saying it should not have happened.
“As the director of the convention, I deeply regret the incident. In my view, the matter should not have occurred.
“I have instructed the PH Convention secretariat to look into the complaint thoroughly and identify the actual issues involved, including any individuals who may have been responsible, so that appropriate action can be taken moving forward,” he said during the ministry’s weekly press conference here today. He said media practitioners should always be given adequate space to carry out their duties, although situations involving limited physical space, large crowds and movement around interview areas could sometimes lead to incidents.
According to Fahmi, the organiser had prepared several facilities for media personnel, but acknowledged that certain areas may have become overcrowded during the event. On Tuesday, KMJ lodged a police report over alleged aggressive behaviour by security personnel towards media practitioners covering the 2026 PH Convention in Johor Bahru on Sunday.
In a statement, KMJ said the report, filed at the Johor Bahru Sentral police station, was a proactive measure following the alleged incident involving media practitioners from Johor and Kuala Lumpur. According to the club, security personnel allegedly obstructed media practitioners at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre while they were carrying out coverage of the political convention.
“The incident involved both physical and verbal confrontations while media practitioners were performing their duties. “The situation, which became difficult to control, disrupted the work of media personnel and raised concerns over their safety while carrying out their professional responsibilities,” it said.
