Catholics in Sabah, Malaysia, celebrated Palm Sunday, marking the start of Holy Week with processions and reflections on the Passion of Christ, despite the heatwave. Church leaders emphasized the spiritual significance of the day, focusing on the upcoming events leading to Easter.

Kota Kinabalu : Catholic s in Sabah gathered in churches to observe Palm Sunday , also known as Passion Sunday, commencing the Holy Week despite the prevailing heatwave. This day marks the beginning of a crucial period of observances for Christians globally, culminating in the Easter celebration, the foundational event of the Christian faith. The celebration at St Simon Church in Likas commenced with a solemn procession.

Rev Fr Michael Modoit, the church’s rector, led parishioners from the hall to the main church building. The faithful carried palm leaves, a symbol of Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. During his homily, Fr Michael elaborated on the spiritual significance of Palm Sunday and its role in readying believers for the core events of the Christian faith: the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He stated, “We are already in Holy Week. Today, we begin reflecting on the Passion of Christ,” dressed in red liturgical vestments representing Christ’s sacrifice. Fr Michael clarified that the Gospel reading during Palm Sunday is deliberately extended to encompass the comprehensive narrative of Christ’s Passion. He highlighted that the reading can be broken down into 14 separate sections, each representing significant moments leading up to the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. These sections delve into crucial events that occurred before Jesus' crucifixion, including Judas Iscariot's betrayal, the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper, Peter's denial of Jesus, and Christ’s struggle in prayer before his arrest. He also discussed Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate, noting that the Roman governor was in a difficult situation despite acknowledging Jesus’ innocence. “Pilate found himself in a dilemma, pressured by the crowd, yet aware that Jesus had done no wrong,” he stated. \Fr Michael proceeded to reflect on Christ’s suffering, encompassing mockery, humiliation, and eventual crucifixion. He reminded the congregation that Good Friday, though a public holiday, is a sacred day, commemorating the Way of the Cross and Christ’s ultimate sacrifice. The homily concluded with a reaffirmation that the Passion narrative concludes not with death, but with the hope of resurrection, which is celebrated on Easter Sunday. The day's second service, led by former rector Rev Fr Cosmas Lee, emphasized the importance of silence, and a period of silence followed the statement. This allowed the congregation time for reflection on the readings and their own lives, to fully embrace the spirit of the day.\Palm Sunday observances in Sabah and across the world provide Christians with a reflective opportunity to enter into the Holy Week. The carrying of the palm leaves on Palm Sunday is a tradition symbolizing the welcoming of Jesus to Jerusalem before His crucifixion. The significance of the detailed Gospel reading focuses attention on the final days of Jesus’ life, preparing the community for both the sorrow and joy that mark the coming days. The message of the Holy Week is one of self-sacrifice, love, and hope, that will culminate in the celebration of Easter and the resurrection of Christ. The emphasis on the suffering of Jesus is meant to encourage greater empathy for others, and to remind followers of their obligations to care for others. The church provides spiritual direction to all who attend, to allow the opportunity for spiritual growth and community support. The week's events serve to allow for quiet meditation and reflection about their lives, their actions, and to prepare themselves for the new beginnings that Easter will usher in. The readings and sermons provided throughout the week help to educate all attendees on the important events in the Christian faith
