KUALA LUMPUR: The hearing of Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's application to stay the proceedings in his Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB) trial pending the outcome of his appeal to obtain witnesses' recorded statements has been brought forward to July 4.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah, however, instructed that the cross-examination of the Umno president proceed on Wednesday as he did not want the trial to be impeded.Ahmad Zahid's lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik had earlier asked for the cross-examination to be postponed pending the hearing of the stay application, which was initially fixed for July 7.If the court refused to postpone, Hisyam said the defence was ready to proceed with the hearing of the stay application on Wednesday.

"They are asking for justice yet they are imposing on us. I do not appreciate that," she said, adding that the prosecution needed time to file in its affidavit-in-reply. On Monday , Ahmad Zahid's defence informed the court that it had filed a notice of motion on June 23 to stay the trial proceedings pending the outcome of an appeal in his application to obtain recorded witness statements from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in his corruption case involving YAB funds.

The dismissal was on the grounds that the statements were made in the belief and expectation that they would remain confidential and any disclosure would prejudice and compromise public interest.
