PUTRAJAYA: Wisma Putra is seeking the United Nations (UN) explanation on Malaysia's latest status on its removal as a signatory of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This is despite having issued a withdrawal letter to the UN, Malaysia was still listed as a member nation of the treaty in the world body's website, said the Foreign Ministry.

"The UN resident coordinator in Malaysia will be asked to explain to the ministry today on the process and our latest status following the withdrawal. "We are disappointed that Malaysia is still named as a member nation of the treaty in the UN website," said the ministry in a statement. The government had issued a withdrawal letter to the UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres on April 29 to inform the international body of Malaysia's withdrawal from ratifying the treaty.

This came following Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's announcement on April 5 that Malaysia would not be ratifying the treaty. Wisma Putra then said that Malaysia would be removed from the list after the UN completed the necessary procedure. Its objective is to end impunity against perpetrators of the most serious crimes – genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression.
