Wicked Part 2 receives a new release date, making a surprising move that places its debut only a year following Part 1's release. The upcoming two-part musical fantasy film is an adaptation of the incredibly successful and long-running 2003 musical developed by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman that explores the origin of The Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch of the West.

Wicked Part 2 will now be released on November 26, 2025, moving up almost a month from its originally scheduled release of Christmas 2025. With the film's new release date, both parts of Chu's musical adaptation will now release just within a year of one another, as Wicked Part 1 is currently slated to release on November 27, 2024.
Wicked's Journey To Cinema Screens Has Been A Long Time Coming With the original stage show remaining popular after 20 years since it first debuted on stage, there is an incredible amount of anticipation surrounding Wicked Parts 1 and 2. Universal's attempts to adapt the musical into film began in 2012, as director Marc Platt was confirmed to be producing following his involvement in the original show.
With Chu joining the production, progress began to move forward at a steady pace, as Erivo and Grande were cast in Wicked in the November of that year. While originally conceived as a single film, Wicked was confirmed to be released in two parts in April 2022, dividing the stage show and allowing for new additions, including an all-new song written by Schwartz.
While some may still be skeptical of Wicked being adapted into 2 films, many will also likely be relieved that the wait between films has been reduced. Though the musical's long-awaited film adaptation will still have an incredibly long intermission, the rescheduling of Wicked Part 2's release date shows that Universal is confident that Chu's features will strike a chord with audiences.
