Rex deputy chairman John Sharp is working to lure travellers back to the regional airline after COVID.

“The executive chairman runs [the company] and I assist him. He’s out of the country for large parts of the year, and so I help him a lot,” Sharp says. Sharp is hoping that profitability will return far earlier. In the first half of this financial year, Rex posted a $1.9 million operating loss and an after-tax loss of $16.5 million – against a record $1.4 billion profit at Qantas and a return to the black by Virgin.
“It was a great time, and we had a tremendous community of people my age in the district,” he says. “It’s a very satisfying way to live your life. “I think politics has changed. Social media has made it harder, and a less attractive place to be. The media now does its best to destroy people rather than the policy. I feel sorry for the guys in politics today because they cop a lot of flack for stuff that often they don’t deserve. It makes life pretty difficult.”in November and twice a year he lunches with a group of ministers in the Howard government. The former prime minister usually gives a speech after which they recall the glory days.
