Shyamalan on why he cuts away from explicit violence in KnockAtTheCabin: 'You have the 14-year-old boys that are like, 'More blood', then you have the older women that are like, 'Oh, I would never tell Claire to come see this movie, it's too violent'.'
M. Night Shyamalan explains why he cuts away from explicit violence in his new movie Knock at the Cabin. The director best-known for The Sixth Sense has undoubtedly gone through many ups and downs during the course of his long movie career. But things have been on a definite uptick for Shyamalan in recent years, thanks to box office hits like Glass, Split and 2021’s Old.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Knock at the Cabin in some ways looks like a typical Shyamalan movie, but in other ways it definitely is not. For one thing, the apocalyptic horror film has scored an R-rating from the MPAA, making it just the second movie of Shyamalan’s career to get an R. But though Knock at the Cabin may be more violent than the typical Shyamalan film, it’s not a full-on horror movie gorefest.
"Because I smash many genres together, how to balance them together so the flavors don't cancel each other out, because they could easily cancel each other out. … Like, for example, I'm trying to get everyone, so you have the 14-year-old boys that are like, 'More blood', then you have, like, the older women that are like, 'Oh, I would never tell Claire to come see this movie, it's too violent'.
So Shyamalan’s own history clearly shows that the director is willing to push the boundaries of violence when he thinks it’s necessary for the story. But in general, his films have dealt more in psychological horror, as in The Sixth Sense, which certainly didn’t need any graphic violence to be effective.
Given that Shyamalan seems intent on attracting a diverse audience to his films , it makes sense that he would curtail the explicit violence he depicts. On the other hand, it could be argued that a few of his films might have benefited from his being willing to cut loose a little more on the gore front. Already an unintentionally comedic movie, The Happening might have actually been a masterpiece had Shyamalan gone for a Sam Raimi level of over-the-top violence.
