A bleak, brownish haze lingered over the Bay Area on Monday, obscuring the San Francisco skyline and adding to the gloom on a day also marked by unusually cold temperatures.
skyline and adding to the gloom on a day also marked by unusually cold temperatures.
Amid the gross-looking conditions, air quality levels deteriorated today and are expected to remain unhealthy into Tuesday, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Kristine Roselius, a spokesperson with the management district, said a temperature inversion over Northern California is acting like a lid, pushing all the pollution — especially smoke from wood-burning fireplaces — toward the earth and creating a stagnant air mass.Overnight lows dropped into the 30s and 40s last night, and a temperature inversion developed, with a layer of warm air above the cold air at the surface.
"Despite a weak low-pressure system moving through Northern California, light surface winds will cause high air pollution levels to remain over the region," the management district said in a release."Cold overnight temperatures, patchy dense fog, and limited vertical mixing will continue to trap wood smoke at ground level, leading to unhealthy air quality in the Bay Area."
