In fact, cars made since the mid-1990s are equipped with an ODB-II connector, usually located in the front dash under the steering wheel. You can actually buy a reader, many cost less than $20, that will plug into the socket and be able to tell you what error codes are triggering the light."Generally, they are related to emissions, the fuel system, the air intake, things like that," Harley said.
The oxygen sensor will actually trigger the check engine light if it detects abnormalities with the way your engine is burning fuel, Harley said.According to Harley, an oxygen sensor problem is an example of an instance where you shouldn't let the light stay on. The oxygen sensor sits in front of the car's catalytic converter, a device that turns harmful emissions into less harmful emissions.
