The climate-controlled room that has suppressed the home run at the Rockies’ mile-high Coors Field and the Diamondbacks’ Chase Field generally has the opposite effect in more humid locales such as San Diego.
By storing baseballs in a room-sized humidor in which the temperature and the relative humidity were controlled, the Rockies sought to add water to the air around their baseballs and reduce their Coefficient of Restitution, or bounciness. While 10 teams used humidors in 2021, their installation at all parks this year figures to have varying effects across the game because the conditions mandated by MLB — 70 degrees and 57 percent relative humidity — could remove water from the air surrounding the baseball at some locales, increasing their bounciness.
