Why does Percy play that song in No Hard Feelings?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The song that Percy plays for Maddie on the piano during the most touching scene in No Hard Feelings carries a deeper meaning in the movie. No Hard Feelings is a throwback to the raunchy comedies of the early 2000s starring Jennifer Lawrence as Maddie, a down-on-her-luck young woman who agrees to date socially awkward teenager Percy, played by Andrew Barth Feldman, to help boost his self-confidence in exchange for a Buick Regal.
Feldman first rose to prominence in musical theater. He played the title role in the musical Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway and played Linguini in a benefit concert presentation of Ratatouille the Musical that streamed on TodayTix. Playing Percy in the No Hard Feelings cast marked Feldman’s biggest movie role to date, and the producers took advantage of his musical talents for a heartwarming scene in which Percy plays a song for Maddie on the piano to show her how he feels.
“Maneater” is referenced earlier in the film when Percy tells Maddie that the song used to scare him as a child. He thought the song was about a monster, and thanks to lyrics like “She’ll only come out at night,” he was petrified that the maneater would come and get him. This is when Maddie realizes that Percy is even more sheltered and pure-hearted than she thought.
No Hard Feelings Uses The Maneater Song To Explain Maddie & Percy's Relationship In No Hard Feelings, the lyrics of “Maneater” are used to explain the complicated relationship between Maddie and Percy. At first, Maddie is spending time with Percy as a monetary transaction, but they both start to feel real affection for each other. The line, “Watch out, boy, she’ll chew you up,” plays like a warning to Percy as he grows closer to the woman that his parents hired to date him.
