came to know about my book through our mutual friend Chloë Sevigny, and approached me about hosting a launch event at the store. After sharing the book with him, we decided that it would be fun to design a couple garments inspired by my tales of the Club Kids. Then, after starting work on the OC capsule, I joined forces with Christian Mitchell and MAC Pro to curate a special seven-piece makeup set of Club Kid essentials, which will also be available at the launch.
Club Kid looks were generally handmade with materials scavenged from around the city. It was all about assemblage. We would gather bits and bobs at the industrial and plastic supply stores that dominated Canal Street. Utilizing hot glue, wire, and different art supplies, we’d combine them with dissected portions of athletic uniforms, vintage garments, and feathers and jewels found at trim suppliers. Patricia Field and Liquid Sky were important style hubs and resource centers.
What has been the most interesting and powerful revelation about revisiting that part of your life, for both the book and the OC collection? I sense a strong connection between Generation X and the incoming Generation Z, in that we desperately crave authenticity, and both generations were germinated amidst conservative political eras. Generation X had to endure the dominance of Reagan and Thatcher, as well as the devastating AIDS pandemic. Generation Z is faced with countering Trump and other conservative international politicians, all [the] while facing the terrifying climate crisis that lies ahead of us.
