Volvo's ICE-powered flagship SUV will be sold alongside the fully electric EX90
Volvo will introduce a substantially refreshed XC90 on September 4. The new XC90 will feature a hybrid powertrain, joining the fully electric EX90. Besides the SUV flagships, Volvo said there might be a surprise or two at the event. The EV slowdown caused many automakers to rethink their plans about discontinuing their combustion-powered lineups. Volvo will introduce a new iteration of the XC90, that will be sold as a hybrid alternative to the similarly-sized fully electric EX90.
The large SUV is also expected to boast mechanical upgrades, with a greater focus on electrification, and the latest technology in terms of safety. The official teaser shows the hood of the new XC90, which appears to be more sculpted than the EX90. The headlights also seem slightly different but still retain Volvo's signature Thor's hammer LED graphics. Patent drawings that surfaced in 2022 showed an EX90-style SUV, which could be the new XC90, although nothing is certain.
