PETALING JAYA: A string of inconsistent performances of late has led many to believe that Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong may be past their prime.
But the fired-up independent pair have a good chance to silence their critics by winning the Taiwan Open for their second World Tour title of the season.
V Shem said they went into the match against the Danes with a lot of confidence as they had beaten them recently at the Jeunesse Cup International All-Star Tournament, an invitational meet also in Taiwan in July.“But our opponents started the match very well in the opening game, with their good strategy and placement catching us off guard.
“It has been eight months since we last made the final in Thailand, obviously we hope to win again,” said V Shem. Sol-gyu-Seung-jae had served a stunner when they ousted world No. 1 Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo-Marcus Fernaldi Gideon in the second round of the World Championships in Basel, Switzerland, last month en route to the quarter-finals.They were outclassed 10-21, 17-21 by Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet, ending their hopes of adding a third title to their earlier victories at the Thailand Masters and New Zealand Open in July.
Women’s doubles: Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai bt Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu 21-18, 12-21, 21-17; Kim So-yeong-Kong Hee-yong bt Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti-Ribka Sugiarto 22-20, 21-14.
