In the months since Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed one of the strictest immigration laws in the country, daily life for Florida’s immigrant community has become fraught and governed by fear.

“I imagined that we were coming to the U.S. to have a better life, to be calmer, but that was not the case,” she said. “There is always the fear that something could happen to us.”for the safety of the U.S. two years ago. Before the new law passed, the family used to drive to Chicago once or twice a year to visit Rosas’ grandmother. Now, with fears of being detained and separated, Rosas’ parents and grandmother have mutually canceled all travel plans — even with 1,000 miles between them.Rosas’ mother has lived many years separated from her family in Mexico, and “now, it is going to be like a separation between states,” he said.
