After regulators in dozens of countries halted flights of the plane, the FAA reverses its stance, saying new evidence shows similarities between two deadly crashes.

A wave of countries have closed their airspace to the aircraft over the past three days following the of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX 8 shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa that killed all 157 on board. In late October a 737 MAX 8 operated by Lion Air plunged into the sea off Indonesia after takeoff, killing 189.

Publicly available satellite tracking data for both doomed flights show a similar instability in the rate of climb, with the planes ascending sharply at points followed by periods of descent. Boeing said in a statement that it continues to have full confidence in the safety of the 737 MAX but that it had decided to recommend the FAA temporarily suspend operations of the plane"out of an abundance of caution and in order to reassure the flying public of the aircraft’s safety."

The answer to the question of whether there is a common cause between the Lion Air and Ethiopian crashes may come from analysis of the flight recorders from Ethiopian Flight 302, which will be sent to France for analysis, the FAA said after the grounding announcement.
