PETALING JAYA: It was a day of contrasting fortunes for shuttlers Ng Tze Yong and Lee Zii Jia in the men’s singles second round of the Hong Kong Open.
Tze Yong strolled into the quarter-finals with a dominant 21-12, 21-11 win over Japan’s world No. 14 Kanta Tsuneyama while Zii Jia suffered a shock 21-19, 17-21, 20-22 defeat at the hands of Taiwan’s world No. 37 Lee Chia-hao at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon yesterday.
The 23-year-old is determined to become more consistent after suffering a second-round exit in the China Open in Changzhou last month.“I just want to be consistent every single match.” The 25-year-old had started positively after beating China’s Zhao Junpeng 21-17, 21-16 in the first round but could not maintain his performance against Chia-hao.
The Malaysian, though, looked to have dug himself out of a hole after saving two match points at 18-20 down.Both the points stemmed from errors from Zii Jia, who hit out and at the net.Zii Jia will need to do better with the Asian Games coming up next in Hangzhou from Sept 23-Oct 8.
