Police in Johor, Malaysia rescued two disabled Chinese nationals who were allegedly being exploited for begging. The victims, a 39-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, were found at a premises in Skudai. A 67-year-old local man was arrested and is suspected of acting as a courier, bringing the victims to beg at night markets and restaurants.

Police rescued two Persons With Disabilities (OKU) from China who were believed to be exploited for begging in an operation at a premises in Jalan Temenggong 3, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai, yesterday.

Johor Bahru North Police Chief ACP Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the operation was conducted by the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department together with the Johor Bahru Utara (JBU) and Johor Bahru Selatan (JBS) Police District Headquarters Criminal Investigation Departments at 11 pm. He said the 39-year-old man and 36-year-old woman were rescued following the arrest of a 67-year-old local man in Jalan Perkasa 5, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, here at 10.50 pm on the same day. “The local man involved is believed to have acted as a courier, bringing the victims to beg at night markets and restaurants around Johor Bahru. “It is believed that this activity has been active since the beginning of last month with earnings reaching RM50 to RM150 per day,” he said in a statement today. According to him, a Oppo brand mobile phone, a public transportation agency driver's card, and a Proton Wira were among the items seized in the raid. He said the man was remanded for five days starting today while the two foreigners were placed in a shelter for 21 days and the case is being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007
