U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to have the U.S. take over the war-torn Gaza Strip has generated mixed reactions within his own Republican Party. While some praised his 'bold, decisive' idea, others expressed skepticism, citing concerns about cost, troop deployment, and the long-term viability of the plan. Republicans in Congress, who have largely supported Trump's other initiatives, voiced reservations about abandoning the two-state solution and spending U.S. taxpayer dollars in a region ravaged by conflict. Democrats outright rejected the proposal, condemning it as 'ethnic cleansing.'
U.S. President Donald Trump ’s proposal that the U.S. take over the war-torn Gaza Strip prompted confusion and skepticism from some of his fellow Republicans on Wednesday, while others backed his “bold, decisive” idea.
Skeptical lawmakers said they still favored the two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians that has long been a foundation of U.S. diplomacy. Some also rejected the idea of spending U.S. taxpayer dollars or sending in U.S. troops to a region that has been devastated by more than a year of war.
Republican Senator Jerry Moran said the idea of a two-state solution cannot just be thrown out. “It’s not something that can be unilaterally decided,“ he told reporters. House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the plan as “bold, decisive action to try to secure the peace of that region.”Johnson said he would discuss the issue with Netanyahu when he meets with him at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll taken Jan. 20-21, following Trump's inauguration but before latest comments on Gaza, found that just 15% of Republicans supported the idea of the U.S. using military force to obtain new territory.

Thousands Protest in Egypt Against Trump's Gaza Refugee ProposalThousands of Egyptians gathered near the Rafah border in a rare protest approved by the government against US President Donald Trump's suggestion that Egypt and Jordan accept Gaza refugees. Protesters waved Egyptian and Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as 'Long live Egypt!'. A Sinai resident, Gazy Saeed, said, 'We reject any transfer of Palestinian or Gaza people to Egypt, to the Sinai.' Trump's suggestion sparked controversy as he claimed Gaza had become a 'destruction site' after 15 months of Israeli bombing that displaced 2.3 million Gazans. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi vehemently rejected the proposal, stating Egypt would not allow Gaza residents to be relocated to its territory. He also asserted that Egyptians would take to the streets to express their dissent. Trump reiterated his stance on Thursday, emphasizing that the US had provided significant aid, including military assistance, to Egypt and Jordan. The proposal to relocate Gaza residents has long been rejected by Palestinian leadership and neighboring Arab countries. Since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, the proposal has continued to face strong opposition from the Arab world. Jordan already hosts several million Palestinians, while tens of thousands more reside in Egypt.
