The proposal, announced last week, envisions the US taking over Gaza , rebuilding it into the 'Riviera of the Middle East,' but only after resettling Palestinians elsewhere with no plan for their return. Trump's proposal has been met with widespread condemnation and skepticism.
King Abdullah, a key US ally, firmly opposed the idea of displacing Palestinians, stating that Jordan shares the unified Arab position against such a move. He emphasized that rebuilding Gaza without displacing its residents and addressing their dire humanitarian situation should be the top priority. However, he indicated that Egypt is working on a plan for regional countries to collaborate with Trump on his proposal.Abdullah also offered a diplomatic gesture, proposing to take in 2,000 Palestinian children suffering from cancer. Trump, who had previously threatened to halt US aid to Jordan if it didn't accept refugees, expressed appreciation for the offer. While Trump initially seemed open to considering the Egyptian plan and retreated from his aid threat, he remained steadfast in his vision of 'owning' Gaza and placing it under US authority. Despite the King's strong opposition and the international backlash, Trump maintained his stance, stating, 'We're going to take it, we're going to hold it, we're going to cherish it.' He, however, denied any personal interest in developing property in Gaza.The meeting comes as the ceasefire in Gaza hangs in the balance. Trump had issued an ultimatum to Hamas, demanding the release of all hostages by Saturday, warning that 'all hell' would break out if they failed to comply. While Trump expressed doubts about Hamas' willingness to abide by the ultimatum, he downplayed the risk of a prolonged conflict hindering efforts to achieve a lasting peace between Israel and Hamas.
