Tribeca built one of the biggest film festivals in the country. Then the pandemic hit, and the organization has begun turning parking lots around the country into drive-ins showing comedies and family films

None of the four Tribeca Drive-In locations would be considered a traditional venue for movie watching, but Rosenthal said using ad hoc sites actually is part of the organization’s DNA.

Regardless, Tribeca is far from the only organization turning to socially distanced drive-in offerings during the pandemic, at both traditional and untraditional outposts. And it’s not just in the United States. A drive-in circus popped up in the United Kingdom, and drive-in concerts have become common in Moscow. In Lebanon, drive-ins are even used to show movies., and screenings are free at Orchard Beach, in a community that was hit hard by the virus. Tribeca is also giving away a lot of tickets to first responders, Rosenthal said. A portion of proceeds goes to Black Lives Matter.
