Thousands of protesters have gathered at rallies across the country against the Australia Day public holiday, with the proposed Voice to Parliament taking centre stage.
The public holiday, referred to as “Invasion Day” or “Survival Day” for First Nations communities, has been hotly debated in recent years due to it coinciding with the date Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Sydney Cove in 1788.
But this year's action has transformed to also take aim at the Federal Government’s plan for a national Voice to Parliament. The day of action in Sydney started with Dawn Reflection services before the Invasion Day rally kicked off at Belmore Park in the CBD at 9:30am. Speeches before the march included impassioned calls to stand in solidarity and mobilise “against the fallacy that is constitutional recognition”.
