When Funky artist Chuck Ayers came to Tom Batiuk with news that he wanted to retire, Batiuk saw it as the perfect time to “tie a bow on Funky’s story.”
Several of his characters for “Rapping Around” were based on kids in the school where Batiuk taught, many of which Batiuk “cannibalized” for Funky Winkerbean.
Though the storylines remained humorous, Batiuk examined real-life contemporary issues like suicide, gun violence and drunk driving, and death of a dear friend.Batiuk said the characters will still appear from time to time in “the shared universe of Batiuk’s spin-off“In fact, during the week of Dec. 15, characters from Funky and Crankshaft will do a real crossover in both strips -- where characters will go back and forth,” he said.
Though he is stepping away from the demands of a daily Funky Winkerbean saga, Funky and friends will never be far away. Batiuk will still write the Crankshaft strip -- with artist Dan Davis -- and would like to focus on more collections of Funky and Crankshaft. Volume 12 of “The Complete Funky Winkerbean” book was released on Nov. 15, and “while nothing is set in stone yet, he is in discussions to produce a collection of “Crankshaft” strips as well.
