To combat catalytic converter thefts, follow Frisco’s lead | Opinion

In Frisco, it is now illegal to possess a catalytic converter that has been sawed off. That’s the latest way governments are grasping for some tactic to slow down the spike in thefts of these devices, and though it’s not likely to end the spree, it’s an idea that other cities should consider.

Three years ago, that number was $2,840.last week, Frisco police recorded 132 catalytic converter thefts in the first half of this year, six more than were recorded in all of 2021. In Dallas, there were more than three times as many of these thefts in 2021 as in 2020 , according to reporting by the. And 2022 is on pace to beat that number. Nationwide, this trend has been building for years.
There are already laws on the books meant to make it hard for thieves to fence stolen converters. In 2021, the Texas Legislature passed a law that requires documentation of sales of converters to recycling centers, including taking a thumbprint from the seller. But such regulations are hard to enforce.
