Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Tim Burton is opening up about the larger legacy of his canceled Superman movie, Superman Lives, after Nicolas Cage's big DCEU cameo in The Flash this summer. Despite never actually getting made, Superman Lives, which was meant to reboot the DC legend in the late 1990s, has become something of a cult obsession.
From all the Superman Lives concept art that has emerged over the years to the infamous The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? documentary, the scrapped movie got even more attention in 2023 when Cage suited up as the Man of Steel in The Flash. Nearly three months after The Flash's release, Burton is not entirely disappointed that his DC movie never happened.
No, I don’t have regrets. I will say this: when you work that long on a project and it doesn’t happen, it affects you for the rest of your life. Because you get passionate about things, and each thing is an unknown journey, and it wasn’t there yet. But it’s one of those experiences that never leaves you, a little bit.
It would still be interesting to see Superman Lives represented as an animated movie, especially after Cage's brief, but memorable cameo in The Flash. In the end, while Superman's movie history has had its ups and downs, Superman: Legacy will hopefully be able to avoid all of Superman Lives' creative issues that went on behind the scenes. Unless it becomes an Elseworlds movie, Superman Lives will remain another lost piece of superhero media.
