Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe has split from the party after a long-running dispute over the Voice to Parliament referendum and will move to the crossbench.Senator Lidia Thorpe at her press conference, resigning from the Greens.“It has become clear to me I can’t do that from within the Greens,” she said at a press conference. “Now I will be able to speak feely on all issues from the sovereign perspective without being constrained by portfolios and agreed party positions.
“This is the message delivered on the streets on January 26,” she said, adding that she was thankful for the support she received from Greens leader Adam Bandt and Mehreen Faruqi. Until now, Labor has relied on ACT senator David Pocock for the extra crossbench vote to pass laws, but Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie and her colleague Tammy Tyrrell will likely become more powerful on the crossbench if the government cannot negotiate with Thorpe.
