ANALYSIS: The WA Liberals are no strangers to leadership tussles, but this morning's spill is more awkward than most

The member for the South West electorate of Vasse has said little publicly about where she thinks Dr Honey has gone wrong or what she would do differently. She spent the final years of the Barnett government on the backbench but rose in prominence after the 2017 election defeat. As opposition health spokeswoman, she has since led criticism of the government over the struggles in the hospital system and also won plaudits for her committee role investigating sexual assaults and the treatment of women in the resources industry.

With her fellow Nationals caught off guard, this has been a slow race to develop — with nobody declaring their intention to run, in the days leading up to the meeting.But there are only so many potential candidates, with so few non-Labor MPs in State Parliament. That's because the Nationals cannot win enough seats to be the lead party in government — so only a Liberal can ever be premier from the conservative side of government.
