Liberal candidate Wayne Farnham has comfortably won the Victorian state seat of Narracan in a supplementary election.

The poll for the lower house seat in the West Gippsland region was deferred five days out from the election in November when Nationals candidate Shaun Gilchrist died unexpectedly. It was later revealed the 47-year-old was scheduled to appear in the County Court on sexual offence charges, with a trial date set for June.

State Nationals leader Peter Walsh said at the time the party was not aware of the charges when Mr Gilchrist was endorsed. Labor and the Nationals did not contest the seat in Saturday’s supplementary election, with Mr Farnham winning easily against 10 other candidates. In provisional results at 9pm on Saturday after polling closed Mr Farnham had 43.69 per cent of primary first preference votes and in the two-candidate preferred vote was on 62.56 per cent against his nearest rival Tony Wolfe on 37.44 per cent.

A win in Narracan gives the coalition 28 members in the 88-seat lower house when parliament returns in early February. The Morning Edition newsletter is our guide to the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
