A brief history of the quick sport wagon shows that Audi's Avant is ephemeral.
The Audi RS 6 has turned 20 years old. Audi put out a press release Tuesday recounting the history of this performance model, which has been offered as a sedan but achieved iconic status in Avant wagon form.
Launched in 2002, the C5 Audi RS 6 used a 4.2-liter V-8 from the S6, but with added twin turbochargers and tuning by Cosworth. It produced 444 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, propelling the inaugural RS 6 from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds. Top speed was electronically limited to 155 mph. A later Plus version boosted output to 473 hp and raised the top speed to 174 mph.Manufactured in sedan and Avant body styles, the C5 RS 6 was only sold as a sedan in the United States, and only for the 2003 model year.
