UT Austin alumni Margaret Juhae Lee unveils a memoir of resilience and lost family history
For Margaret Juhae Lee , documenting her family's lost history has been a long and arduous journey.Starry Field: A Memoir of Lost History.She faced numerous challenges, from language barriers to the emotional toll of uncovering painful family secrets, but her determination and love for her family's story kept her going.A deeply personal and emotional quest is at the heart of Lee's journey.
"I started out in art museums, and my favorite part of the job was writing the explanatory labels, explaining artworks and exhibitions," Lee shares. "Some of the other parts of my job I did not enjoy as much."In the early 2000s, Lee embarked on a meticulous investigation into her family tree, a fascinating and challenging process. She was attending NYU, where she was pursuing a master's degree in journalism.
Her research involved digging through old family documents, interviewing relatives, and visiting ancestral sites in Korea.Her new book, Starry Field: A Memoir of Lost History, poignantly explores her family's journey from Korea to America and the impact of historical events on their lives. Her book is a testament to the resilience and strength of immigrant families and a call to remember and honor their lost histories.She now understands his significant impact on Korean history thanks to her investigative skills and passion.
