Let criticism be directed at us and not the athletes who fought hard to enhance Malaysia’s name, says minister.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has apologised for the country’s failure to meet its 70-gold target at the recent SEA Games in the Philippines.

"I have told all not to burden our athletes with negative comments. Let us take the blame and the collective responsibility; let it be directed at us and not the athletes who have fought so long to enhance the country’s name,” he told reporters after chairing the NSC board of managers meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.

The introduction of several new sports in the Philippines has also made it difficult for the athletes to compare their targets because there were no proper records to rely on.
