The Harbour City’s queer community can lay claim to the world’s best COVID-19 recovery, according to a new study from the University of Sydney.

This, Dr Pepin-Neff said, stood in stark contrast to a global decline in queer venues over the last two decades, with research indicating that between 2007 and 2019 the number of listings for gay bars dropped by 37 per cent, along with a 52 per cent drop for lesbian bars. Elliot Solomon, chief executive at the Solotel Group, which manages 26 venues in Sydney including queer hotspots like the Kings Cross Hotel, as well as The Bank and The Courthouse in Newtown, linked the post-COVID resurgence of LGBTIQ venues to the city’s strong queer history.
“Sydney is proudly the LGBTIQ capital of Australia, and the gay bars and clubs that line Oxford Street and the surrounding areas are integral to the Queer community’s history and identity. It was from these bars that the original Mardi Gras protest took place in 1978 and 45 years later it is the epicentre of the largest LGBTIQ celebration in the world.
