Police are seeking more time to inspect devices seized from the home of a Sydney lawyer shot in a "targeted" attack as encrypted material is stalling the gathering of data, a court has heard.The lawyer filed a Supreme Court injunction gaining oversight on police inspections of privileged materialMahmoud Abbas was shot in the leg and abdomen last week as he walked to a car outside his home in Greenacre.
The lawyer then lodged an injunction against the commissioner of police in the NSW Supreme Court asking for a representative to supervise as investigators searched the devices. On Friday, Justice Ian Harrison told the court that NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb had submitted that officers still needed to study "encrypted material" on the devices.
"And [she] has raised the prospect of retaining these devices for some more time … until her officers can be satisfied that they have got to the bottom of all of the materials."
